The initiative [BBIN (Bhutan-Bangladesh-India-Nepal) Agreement for Regulation of Passenger and Cargo Vehicular Traffic] that India had taken to isolate Pakistan might come undone as Bhutan has blocked New DelhiÂ’s move. If the agreement had come through, it would have enabled hassle-free movement of vehicles between India and a few other South Asian countries.
The Government of Bhutan is set to withdraw the Bill on this subject that it had introduced in the countryÂ’s Parliament last year. The agreement had been signed by Bhutan, Bangladesh, India and Nepal in June 2015.
A few news reports have quoted Bhutanese politicians who have said that the Himalayan country was “not ready” to pass the Bill, because its citizens “needed to be convinced about the benefits” of the proposed South Asian connectivity arrangement.
