Aranmula airport project gets green nod

KGS Aranmula International Airport, which is building a Rs 2,000-crore green field airport at Pathanamthitta in Kerala, may restart construction work on the project following the verdict of the National Green Tribunal, Chennai.

The tribunal dismissed a petition challenging various decisions related to the project. The decision includes industrial area notification for the project and the no-objection certificate (NOC) given by the Kerala government.

The tribunal, which handles cases relating to issues such as environmental protection, conservation of forests and natural resources, also dismissed its own interim order passed earlier on the project.

Earlier on April 2, the tribunal gave an injunction order to stop any construction activity in the site until further orders. This was based on a petition filed by the Aranmula Heritage Village Protection Action Council.

The council argued that Aranmula was declared as a global heritage village by the UNESCO. It is noted for its ancient Krishna temple, which is located close to the project site, and for handcrafted metal mirrors.

It may be noted that Pathanamthitta is about 50 km from Sabarimala Ayyappa Temple and is located in between Thiruvanathapuram and Kochi airports.
