Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) proposed to develop a vehicular bridge over Goregaon Creek from Bhagat Singh Nagar slums near New Link Road in Goregaon to reduce traffic on primary arterial roads, including Western Express Highway and New Link Road.

It will also increase connectivity in Oshiwara, Jogeshwari, and Andheri East.

It is the third big-ticket flyover proposed by the civic body this year, including at Senapati Bapat Road and Mahim to connect the area with the proposed coastal road at Bandra Worli Sea Link and a flyover at Juhu Vile Parle Development (JVPD) in Andheri.

BMC’s plan to decongest New Link Road and improve road connectivity to the suburbs of Oshiwara and Jogeshwari aligns with the inauguration of Phase I of the Metro line 2A.

A senior civic official said that BMC expects vehicular traffic to reduce along Link Road due to the new metro line after the completion of Phase II. Currently, it takes over 30 minutes during peak hours for commuting in these areas.

The bridge will be 300 feet in length and will be constructed along DP Road. BMC has been implementing a development plan for improving road connectivity and reducing traffic. In such a case, the creek midway calls for a bridge in this area to make connectivity better and avoid traffic congestion.

Six new bridges besides the Goregaon Creek have also been in the pipeline for over two years to improve connectivity to Madh and Malvani from Versova. Two out of the six bridges are only a few hundred metres away from this project.

According to the official, the overall impact of the bridge over Goregaon Creek will be far-reaching in the long run, as it will impact connectivity toward Madh and Malvani also.
