Cabinet may clear 2 port projects

Union Shipping Secretary PK Sinha informed that the cabinet may clear two new port projects, one in Sagar Island (West Bengal) and Ramyapattanam (Andhra Pradesh) in November.

Meanwhile, the new Shipping Minister Milind Deora informed that his ministry has prioritised faster implementation of port and shipping projects, attract private investments in the sector and utilise India’s vast coastline for economic development.

He said the ministry aims to award 42 projects during the current financial year that would add 245 million tonne capacity at an investment of about Rs 14,000 crore.

India has 12 major ports; Kandla, Mumbai, Jawaharlal Nehru Port, Marmagao, New Mangalore, Kochi, Tuticorin, Chennai, Ennore, Vishakhapatnam, Paradip and Kolkata-Haldia.

He said India’s massive coastline is largely unutilized and his ministry would try to explore the untapped resources that would attract investments and create employment opportunities.

Young minister said safety of sailors or seafarers is the priority of the government and he would strengthen the institutional mechanisms meant for them.
