Govt to boost port infrastructure
The Union government intends to boost investment in port infrastructure. By allowing port operators to tweak freight handling tariff for new public- private partnerships projects in the 12 government-owned ports. It's a clarion call for more investment in port infrastructure. The government's new guidelines for future port projects will allow port operators to annually increase, upto a set limit, cargo handling rates, on the basis of market forces.
Coast Guard adds 4th Dornier to its aircraft fleet
To enhance its maritime surveillance capability over the coastal region in West Bengal and Odisha, the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) North East Region on July 31 inducted a fourth Dornier aircraft under its operational air enclave in Kolkata. This is the fourth Dornier aircraft to be inducted into the enclave operated by the 700 Squadron of the Indian Coast Guard (ICG). The enclave operates from the Netaji Subhas International Airport in Kolkata. This was the first ICG air squadron in the country.
Gold imports down in June, July, says Chidambaram
Union Finance Minister P Chidambaram said on July 31 that gold imports into India were lower in June and July when compared to the same period last year. India is hoping to contain gold imports well below 845 tonne that were shipped last year, Chidambaram said, a week after the central bank restricted imports further, by tying imports to exports volumes.
