A World Bank report has stated that as many as 1.2 billion people - almost the population of India - don't have access to electricity and 2.8 billion have to rely on wood or other biomass to cook and heat their homes. The report is first in a series to monitor progress of the three objectives - full energy access, doubling energy efficiency and renewables - of the UN's Sustainable Energy-for-All initiative.

KEA tells JK govt to take power projects back from NHPC
Kashmir Economic Alliance (KEA) on May 29 criticised the State government for its failure to take power projects back from the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC). Urging government to take back all the NHPC run power projects, KEA said the state water resources were used by other states while Kashmir was reeling under major power crisis.
Govt encourages solar plants in Delhi colonies
The Union government is encouraging those who want to set up solar power plants in various colonies of Delhi. Under the Off-grid and Decentralized Solar Application scheme of Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission, the Ministry provides a subsidy of 30 per cent of the project cost ranging from Rs 42 to Rs 72 per watt peak for off-grid standalone solar photovoltaic (SPV) power plants.
Draft of offshore wind energy policy released
Union Ministry of New and Renewable Energy has released a draft national offshore wind energy policy for 2013. The draft policy was written with inputs from a steering committee on offshore wind energy. According to the draft, onshore wind energy has reached a stage of deployment that makes it competitive with traditional fossil fuel power generation.
NTPC added 4 gw capacity in FY13
State-run power producer NTPC added 4,170 mw of generation capacity during 2012-13 surpassing its earlier best capacity addition of 2,820 mw in 2011-12. The company currently has an installed capacity of 41,184 mw through 16 coal based, two solar renewable, seven gas or liquid fuel and seven Joint Venture power stations
