The Aluva-Edappally stretch of National Highway 47 in Kochi is to be widened into four-lane one to facilitate traffic during the metro rail works. The Kochi Metro Rail authorities already taken initiative for this. The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) has given its consent for the widening of the stretch. The National Highway will be widened by evacuating encroachments on either side but without acquiring additional land.

Assam to get 3000-km new roads
Media reports say that the Union Cabinet on July 3 approved a proposal by the Rural Development Ministry to relax norms for Assam so that 1,877 unconnected habitats can get road connectivity under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY). These habitats, having population ranging between 250 and 499, will now be connected new roads covering a length of 3,140 km.
Karnataka to float fresh bids for BDA layout road works
The Karnataka on July 4 submitted before the High Court that fresh tenders would be called for execution of road works in the controversial Nadaprabhu Kempegowda Layout, near Kengeri, and that it would revoke the previous tenders. The Government Counsel R DevĆĀdas, in his submission before the High Court, which was hearing a petition regarding controversial financial tender/bids for executing the road works, said fresh tenders would be called shortly to award the works afresh.
TN sanctions Rs 250 cr for road Infrastructure
Media reports say that Tamil Nadu government on July 2 sanctioned over Rs 250 crore for different road-related works in different districts of the state. About Rs 157.37 crore was allotted for repairing damaged roads to the coverage of 78.80 km in the Ariyalur and Perambalur districts which are spotted with limestone mines and cement factories.
Kerala allocates emergency aid for road repairs
The Kerala government has allocated an emergency assistance of Rs 143.5 crore for repairing roads that were damaged during monsoon. The amount is being given to complete repair work immediately after monsoon, said the State Public Works Minister VK Ibrahim Kunju.
Railways invite RfQ for Rs 320 bn projects
Media reports indicate that the Indian Railways invited requests for qualification (RfQ) from domestic and foreign firms for setting up two locomotive factories at an investment of Rs 32,000 crore. The Railways expects to award these two projects, which include setting up diesel locomotive factory and a electric locomotive factory, by December. The Railways planned to set up an electric locomotive factory at Madhepura and a diesel locomotive factory at Marh
Land to be acquired for Rs 5,000 cr Surat Ring Road
For the Rs 5,000 crore Surat Outer Ring Road project, land acquisition would begin by Diwali. Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) and Surat Urban Development Authority (SUDA) are ready with 11 draft TP schemes for development of the proposed 500 square metre of area on both sides of the road.
Chennai outer ring road to be built at Rs 985 cr
For the road development project of Chennai Outer Ring Road Phase II, Ashoka Buildcon company along with GVR Infra Projects has formed a consortium of 50:50 per cent and submitted a bid to the Tamil Nadu Road Development Company (TNRDC). The Ring Road Phase II is to be constructed from Nemilicheri on NH 205 to Minjur on Thiruvottiyur-Ponneri-Panchetti (TPP) Road on design, build, finance, operate and transfer (DBFOT) annuity basis.
Centre scales down road construction to 5,000 km
The Union Road Transport and Highways Ministry has scaled down its projects award target by nearly half to 5,000 km for this financial year compared to target of 9,500 km in 2012-13. Keeping in view of a dismal show last fiscal, the government has cut down the awarding of the road contracts. Last fiscal, the Ministry was barely able to award 15 per cent of the targeted 9,500 km of highways.
TN sanctions Rs 258 cr for road works
The Tamil Nadu government is to upgrade the road infrastructure in the state at a cost of Rs 258.42 crore. The State Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa said in a statement that the road projects include road repairs in Ariyalur and Perambalur districts at Rs 152.37 crore.
