The Union government has stated that investment in road construction in rural areas saw a ten-fold jump under the United Progressive Alliance's (UPA's) regime. The government rolled out more than 20,100 all-weather roads across the nation last year, a report by the government said projecting a rosy picture of the sector, which is battling with scores of problems like equity crunch, delays in clearances and land acquisition besides major players abandoning projects mid-way.

NHAI not in favour of PPP mode for road projects

Jamshedpur’s key road project to begin on PPP model
In Jharkhand's Jamshedpur, the Eastern Road Corridor Project would soon begin on a public private partnership (PPP) with Jharkhand government and Tata Steel as participants. BMC’s plan to let locals park on one side of road
A new parking policy for Mumbai is being brought out by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) under which BMC plans to give permits to local residents to park vehicles on road. The BMC is compiling a list of roads where residents can park vehicles on one side of the road. They will then be given annual permits allowing them to park their cars there; no other vehicle can park on these roads. The Union Territory administration on May 23 decided to to focus on better transport for Tricity-Chandigarh, Panchkula and Mohali by replacing old buses with new ones and upgrading primary education with future population growth in mind. PM’s secretary tells officials in TN to speed up road projects

Federation suggests ports to avoid PPP projects
Water Transport Workers Federation urged the Chennai Port to develop the proposed mega container terminal of its own instead of awarding the project to a BOT or PPP (public private partnership) operator. Kerala takes up major road projects for Kochi city
Kerala government has taken up four major road and building projects that would contribute to the development of Kochi city. Work on the projects were scheduled to begin on May 22. This will include the Rs 660-crore Seaport-Airport Road second phase development, four-laning of the present road; construction of the Roads and Bridges Development Corporation Kerala office and shopping mall and the construction of the first concrete road.

Punjab to repair 11,000 km link roads
Punjab government on May 21 gave its nod for the repair of link roads covering 11,000 km at a cost of Rs 1,700 crore across the state to be completed by June, 2014. The State Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal gave his nod for the road repairs while reviewing the status of national highways, district roads, link roads, ROBs/RUBs, government buildings and several other infrastructure projects.
