As part of his efforts to expedite infrastructure projects in different states, Finance Minister P Chidambaram held discussion with promoters of delayed projects and officials of state-run banks in Karnataka.

During the discussion, the minister reviewed 21 infrastructure projects, which are delayed, in the state across steel, metals and alloys, power, road, oil and gas sectors. These projects are worth a total Rs 700,000 crore.

These projects are stalled because of reasons like land acquisition by the states, environment clearance from the ministry of environment and forests, coal linkages, gas allotments, and extension of concession period.

Bankers and promoters informed the minister the reasons for delay in these projects and they also discussed the ways to overcome some of the hurdles.

Some of the projects that came up for review include JSW pellatisation plant in Bellary; Lanco and Shravanti projects in Uttarkhand; HKR and NAM road projects in Andhra Pradesh.

The minister also reviewed JP power venture in Madhya Pradesh; Thrissur express highway in Kerala; border checkpost project in Madhya Pradesh; Thrtha-Urga project in Sikkim, among others.

Chidambaram expressed the GovernmentÂ’s willingness to speed up the infrastructure projects, and assured the stakeholders of all help from the Centre for the timely execution of the projects.
