Visakhapatnam port’s cargo handling has come down by by 1 million tonne during the current financial year compared to last year. The port Chairman GVL Satya Kumar attributed the dip in the cargo handling to fall in intake of iron ore by China, government restrictions on iron ore mining and slump in transshipment of petroleum products and crude during the year.
Satya Kumar was reviewing the performance of the port on August 15 after hoisting the National Flag on the occasion of the Independence Day.
During the current fiscal, the port handled 20 million tonne of cargo till date as against 21 million tonne last year during the corresponding period. He said the port had handled 4.12 million tonne of iron ore and pellets during the current year, of the total quantity of 7.15 million tonne of iron ore handled by all the major ports in the country.
