Kerala govt mulls airport project in Wayanad

Under the public-private partnership model, the Kerala government proposes to build a feeder airport at Wayanad district and it is awaiting a key reports on the project from consultants.

The techno economic feasibility report and the environment impact assessment are being prepared by Knight Frank India for this project. Both the reports will be submitted in six months and the government will take further measures.

The state government earlier received a suggestion from the Airports Authority of India to set up the airport in a 100-hectare site at Panamaram, Nadavayal village in the tourism-oriented Wayanad.

Besides enhancing the tourists inflow to the district, the airport may also boost connectivity to the district, which has several tourism spots. At present, Wayanad is connected only through roads.

Feeder airport will offer connectivity to the nearest international airports like Kochi and Kozhikode. The government also plans to have other supplementary infrastructure facilities in the area to stimulate economic activity in the backward district, which has the highest adivasi population in Kerala.
