Delhi Urban Development Minister Arvinder Singh Lovely is in favour of vertical expansion of the city provided the union government financially supports the development of required infrastructure.

Speaking to a media agency, Lovely said there is a need to strengthen basic services like drainage, water supply and power distribution network to allow vertical expansion of Delhi.

He sought financial assistance from the central government for upgrading the basic civic amenities in order to enable vertical expansion. It may be recalled that earlier union urban development Minister Kamal Nath called for the need to promote vertical growth in Delhi.

Meanwhile, the Delhi government decided to relax restrictions under the Section 81 of the Land Reforms Act which will mean agricultural land will be allowed for construction of houses and other purposes.

Further the state government extended Lal Dora to 360 more villages. Lal Dora refers to land which is part of the village ‘abadi’ (habitation) which is used for non agricultural purpose only. It was exempted from the building bye laws, construction norms and related regulations under Delhi Municipal Act.

The above moves may ease restriction on use of agriculture land for construction and encourage private developers to construct residential units.
