Narrow stretches on NH-49 in Kerala to be widened

In Kerala, officials concerned have proposed to take immediate measures to repair roads along the national highways in Kerala. A proposal to widen the narrow road along the Munnar-Devikulam-Poopara-Bodimedu on NH-49 will be submitted to SS Nahar, chief engineer, the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. SS Nahar was in Kerala on a two-day inspection spree and checked the Munnar stretch on June 29 morning.

Noting that the road in the stretch was extremely narrow, the chief engineer said that the widening of the area will be taken up on a war-footing. PWD-NH officials said that Nahar had expressed great concern over the narrowness of the roads. The officials added that they have submitted a proposal to accelerate the design approval of the collapsed bridge in the route.

The Munnar-Bodimedu route is proving to be extremely dangerous, since it is a narrow two-lane road. Over the years, the widening procedures in the route have been mired in controversy, as the land is owned by tea-plantation owners. The route is prone to accidents especially during the rainy season.

Proposals to widen the route in the Ernakulam-Munnar stretch of NH-49 have been also been submitted. However, officials have expressed difficulties in executing the widening plans due to the presence of electric posts etc. Officials with the PWD-NH for NH-220 stretch said that several proposals for widening the Kumily-Kottayam road have been proposed. Also, there are proposals for setting up protection marks along the route.
