Nayachar channel to aid Haldia port

As part of long-term measures to improve navigability at Haldia Dock Complex (HDC) in West Bengal, the Kolkata Port Trust (KoPT) proposes to cut a channel right through the Nayachar island. The Ministry of Shipping and KoPT’s board of trustees have approved this project. UK-based HR Wallingford has suggested this channel.

The UK-based HR Wallingford is a UK-based organisation involved in the development of the Bristol Deep Sea Container Terminal and a mega port facility on Kuwait’s Boubyan Island.
This experiment has been tried out in Vietnam to good effect. Nayachar is an island formed solely by deposition of silt in the Hooghly, close to where the river enters the Bay of Bengal. The island bifurcates the river.

The channel flowing along the island’s eastern bank is called Rangaphala and ships bound for the Kolkata Dock System use this.
