Rs 1,000 crore for repair of highways, district roads

The Karnataka government will spend Rs 1,000 crore on repairing the rain-damaged State highways and district roads in the state.
About 177 km of State highway and 1,000 km of district roads have been damaged due to the last monsoon rains, say media reports.

Disclosing this the State Public Works Department (PWD) Minister HC Mahadevappa said on October 22 that State Finance Department has approved an action plan prepared by the PWD for road repair and the work will commence in next November. PWD will ensure quality in the repair of the roads, he added.

For any substandard work in the repair works, PWD engineers and the contractors concerned will be held responsible, the Minister said.
About 3,700 km of road will be upgraded in the first phase.

To oversee implementation of all public works a vigilence committee has been constituted, Mahadevappa said. The department has chalked out plans to upgrade about 7,000 km of road network in the State under Karnataka State Highway Improvement Project two (KSHIP-II).
