To bring in private operators to run airports, the Union government on July 4 approved privatisation of the Chennai and Kolkata airports, which are currently operated by the Airports Authority of India (AAI). Separately, AAI has sought approval from the government to raise Rs 1,000 crore through issue of tax-free bonds to develop 50 low-cost airports in the country. AAI to convert terminals in 24 airports into cargo ones
In India's 24 airports, redundant passenger terminals will be converted into cargo terminals by the Airports Authority of India. Inaugurating the air cargo complex at the Mangalore airport last week, the Union Civil Aviation Minister Ajit Singh said AAI has 24 airports in the country that will be used for domestic cargo operations.
Hyderabad, Delhi, Mumbai airports rated high by ACI
India's Delhi and Hyderabad airports managed by GMR Group and Mumbai airport by GVK Group have been rated high in respective categories in Airport Quality Service (ASQ) by Airports Council International (ACI) for 2012. Centre asks UP to speed up land transfer for airports
Union Civil Aviation Minister Ajit Singh has asked the Uttar Pradesh government to expedite transfer of land for airports at Agra, Jhansi and Meerut. Singh wrote to the State Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav and asked him to take other measures in this regard.
