Stable political environment plays a vital role

The success of an FTZ depends on various factors like attracting investments, level of exports and foreign exchange, linkages with the domestic economy, apart from political stability, strategic location, quality infrastructure and marketing advantages. Some of the rules and guidelines have to be reframed
I cannot say much on this as of now, as certain issues have yet to be streamlined. Today, FTZs/FTWZs are functioning under the SEZ Act and rules. However, we realise that the activities of FTWZs are of different nature and their requirements are also different. Hence, some of the rules and guidelines have to be reframed. The process is on.
The best laid plans
Kandla Special Economic Zone (KASEZ) has come a long way since its inception. Still, although KASEZ has been the pioneer among SEZs, challenges are plenty in growth and development. Janaki Krishnamoorthi traces the journey of the oldest FTZ in India.
