Panel suggests auction of mining leases
In order to bring about transparency and increase state revenue from allocation of mining leases, Justice MB Shah Commission recommended that such leases be granted through public auction. After holding several hearings and inspections in Goa, the commission said natural resources, mostly iron ore, had made a few leaseholders billionaires. A Goa government panel has recommended capping minÂing activity in the coastal state at 20 million metric tonne in the next four years in order to protect fragile ecosystem and reduce the social stress.Goa Golden Jubilee Development Council (GGJDC), headed by scientist Raghunath Mashelkar, has pointed out that unbridled mining activity has surpassed the social and environmental threshold in the region.
Non-major ports key despite growth rate dip
Non-major ports handled over one-third of the country's total maritime freight traffic during 2010-11.However, there was a sharp decline in the groÂwth rate during the year, compared to the previous year.The growth in cargo handled by non-major ports in 2010-11 was at 8.8 percent, against a record 35.7 percent increase in 2009-10 over the previous year.
IRB Infra to seek compensation
IRB Infrastructure Developers plans to claim a compensation of around Rs 60-70 crore from the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) for terminating its contract for a Goa road project after the latter could not acquire land for it. Road projects have faced delays due to issues relating to land acquisition, environmental clearances and right of way but this is only the second instance in the last two years where a project has been cancelled due to NHAI's inability to acquire land.
