The Union Cabinet on August 2 approved continuation of the interest subvention scheme to provide short-term crop loans to farmers in order to ensure the availability of crop loans at affordable rates to farmers for loans upto Rs 3 lakh at the rate of 7 per cent per annum. This scheme has already been extended to crop loans borrowed from private sector scheduled commercial banks in respect of loans given within the service area of the branch concerned.

Assam to get 3000-km new roads
Media reports say that the Union Cabinet on July 3 approved a proposal by the Rural Development Ministry to relax norms for Assam so that 1,877 unconnected habitats can get road connectivity under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY). These habitats, having population ranging between 250 and 499, will now be connected new roads covering a length of 3,140 km.
Mumbai Metro Line-3 gets approval
The Union government gave its approval for the construction of a 33.5 km-long metro corridor in Mumbai which would run from Colaba to Santacruz Electronics Export Processing Zone (SEEPZ) via Bandra.
Boost to highway expansion as govt eases green norms
The Union Cabinet on June 27 cleared a proposal that will allow the construction of highways of up to 100-km length and 40-m width without seeking an environment clearance. So far, environment clearance was mandatory for building any highway stretch that was over 30-km long and more than 20 metre wide.
Decision soon on exit clause for highway developers
The Union Cabinet is soon to discuss the proposal for exit clause for highway developers. If the proposal is cleared, road contractors can exit from a road project by bringing in a new developer after the financial closure is complete. The exit clause proposal can only be triggered by the contractor who plans to exit, and cannot be moved without the consent of the bank, which has funded the project.

The Union Cabinet approved proposals for two highway projects worth over Rs 5,000 crore. The Rs 2,015.6 crore highway project in Bihar will be implemented with financial assistance from Japan. The other one is four-lane 368.2-km-stretch in Odisha. The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) also approved the implementation to four-lane the Patna-Gaya-Dobhi section in Bihar with Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) loan assistance.
Bill to declare Lakhipur-Bhanga stretch as a National Waterway
To declare the 121 km Lakhipur-Bhanga stretch of the Barak River as a National Waterway the Union Cabinet on January 10 approved the introduction of a Bill in the Parliament. The Cabinet also gave its approval for preparation of projects/schemes for development of infrastructure facilities on this stretch of the river at an estimated cost of Rs.123 crore with implementation in two phases.
Roads Ministry mulls sops for road developers
To allow private road builders to exit from projects soon after construction, the Union Highways Ministry will make an appeal to the Union Cabinet in this regard.

The Union Cabinet has approved a rehabilitation-cum-restructuring package for the Hooghly Dock & Port Engineers, Kolkata, one of the country's oldest shipyards in the private sector.
Cabinet approves new Mining Bill
The Union Cabinet approved the Mines and Mineral Development and Regulation (MMDR) Bill, 2011. The Bill aimed at curbing illegal mining and bringing more transparency in the allocation of licences for mining.The Bill has provisions for 26 percent profit sharing by coal miners and an amount equivalent to royalty by non-coal miners with project affected people.
