After a hiatus in 2014, there are emerging signs of takers for PPP projects in some of the sectors, including ports. Baring some shortcomings, PPPs have achieved resonable success rate. However, it is too early to say that they have been a grand success.
Deora for cabotage exemption for Vizhinjam port
The Union Minister of State for Shipping Milind Murali Deora has said in Thiruvananthapuram recently that there is a strong case for granting cabotage exemption for Vizhinjam port. The demand for exemption requested by the Kerala government is justifiable, however the views of Indian National Ship Owners Association and other stakeholders will have to be taken into consideration, he added.
Kerala sanctions funds for development of two ports
For the overall development of Vizhinjam port, the Kerala government has sanctioned Rs 1 crore and Rs 3.80 crore for Beypore Port. In Vizhinjam port, Rs 50 lakh each will be used to construct channel marketing buoys and fire fighting system respectively.
Vizhinjam port unable to use new wharf
Owing to structural shortcomings and insufficient infrastructure facilities, Vizhinjam port is unable to use a wharf, which was newly constructed at a cost of Rs 8.87 crore. The director board of Vizhinjam International Seaport approved the master plan for the proposed Vizhinjam port project.
