Plan panel suggests PPP model for Vizhinjam project

Minister for Ports and Excise in Kerala K Babu informed that the planning commission suggested the state government to go ahead with the PPP model to develop the Vizhinjam international seaport port.

The state government plans to carry out the port development, along with the external infrastructure work, in phases with the cumulative cost estimated to be around Rs 6,595 crore.

The state government plans to partner with private entities to develop the port based on a public private partnership (PPP) model.

The plan panel recommended this noting that the state government can raise around Rs 600-1,000 crore for developing the port infrastructure.

The panel officials suggested this during a recent meeting with the state government officials, the minister said.

It may be recalled that the environment impact assessment (EIA) study for the port is being finalised and would be submitted to state pollution control board soon.

The port is envisaged to provide in total 2,000 m of quay length in three phases and is designed to cater primarily for container transshipment.

According to the the master plan for the project, a modern fishing harbour with amenities like berthing facilities for fishing boats and hygienic auction hall would be set up. The port will have dedicated rail and road connectivity to transport goods and designed by Aecom constulant.
