Maharashtra government will have a new industrial policy by 1 April and for the first time, energy companies will be incentivised under the policy for producing electricity. Although energy companies are presently not listed under the Industrial Development and Regulation Act, the sector is given the importance of electricity in the economy. The state government was considering sops in the form of duty waiver. Power sold in the state is regulated by the state electricity regulator, the government does not have much say, but the duties could be waived.
The policy will help in meeting electricity demand, which is currently at 16,000 MW, while supply is 12,500 MW, because of which producers have to buy about 3,500 MW from other states on a daily basis.
