Agency reports indicate that the cargo handling at the Dhamra Port in Odisha doubled during 2012-13 to 10 million tonne (mn t) from over 5 mn t in the previous year.
Between April 1, 2012 and March 5, 2013, the port handled 10 mn t cargo. During this period, the port handled over 8 mn t of import cargo — the highest by any Indian port in only the second year of its operations, reports indicate.
The port aimed to handle 11.2 mn t of cargo during 2012-13. Total imports of coal and limestone handled by the port rose over 60 percent. The port in the coastal district of Bhadrak, about 170 km from Bhubaneswar, is a 50:50 joint-venture between Larsen and Toubro and Tata Steel. It commenced commercial operations May 6, 2011.
The projected target for the port in the fiscal year 2013-14 has been set for 18 million tonne.
