The Thiruvananthapuram Development Authority (TRIDA) has stated that major road works, including widening of important link roads will start this financial year itself. The Kerala government’s budget has also cleared the proposals concerned in this regard. In addition to completing the renovation of 42 kilometres of city roads, widening works on another 60 kilometres will be undertaken this year, TRIDA Chairman PK Venugopal said.

The city’s Vattiyoorkavu Junction and the four-laning of Vattiyoorkavu-Maruthamkuzhi, Vattiyoorkavu-Nettayam and Vattiyoorkavu-Peroorkada needs urgent renovation, he said. ‘Activities related to these works can be started soon. The budget also has set the stage for the widening of the Kazhakkoottam-Kesavadasapuram and the Karamana-Kalayikkavila roads and the road works related to the Attukal Township Project.

The State Chief Minister-led committee for Capital City Development had put forth ten proposals. A set of five proposals were also made for the 2013-14 financial year. This included the construction of a ring road for the city and widening of link roads and all existing streets; formulation of parking policy and construction of parking areas; shopping streets and markets; providing the city with a green cover and the cleaning and renovation of the garbage-choked Parvathy-Puthanar Canal.

The 18.045-km Kovalam-Akkulam stretch of the Parvathy Puthanar passing through the State capital district will be cleaned, dredged, and made navigable for cruise operations from the international airport to Kovalam, the beach tourism destination.
