New Mangalore Port Trust (NMPT) handles a major share of total liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) handling in the country. It handled around 2.08 million tonne of LPG in 2011-12, P Tamilvanan, Chairman of the port trust informed.
The LPG import facility of HPCL in Mangalore contributes around 1.5 million tonne, S Roy Choudhury, Chairman and Managing Director of HPCL informed.
The import facility is a hub to around 350 LPG trucks. On an average, the facility handles 5,000 tonne of LPG on a daily basis. Of this, the road transport of LPG has a major share, he said.
Commissioned in 1996, the facility is spread over an area of 176 acre. The Mangalore facility receives bulk LPG either from West Asian countries or through coastal transhipment from the refinery of Reliance Industries in Jamnagar.
Added to this, the entire LPG production of Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals (MRPL) is also received through pipelines here.
The Mangalore facility caters to the domestic and non-domestic LPG needs of Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Goa.
Choudhury mentioned that the Mangalore LPG import facility is equipped to fill approximately 250 LPG tank trucks every day. The fuel is dispatched either through road tankers or through railway tank wagons.
