The Indian Railways started work on the Rs 1,500 crore project in Andhra Pradesh.

The project, which involves doubling or electrification, is spread over 221 km covering 51 railway stations. It would cover Vijayawada-Gudivada-Machilipatnam, Gudivada-Bhimavaram, Narsapur-Bhimavaram-Nidadavolu sections of Vijayawada division of South Central Railway (SCR).

Recently, the foundation stone for the project was laid by the Minister of State for Railways Kotla Jaya Surya Prakash Reddy.

The ambitious project heralds a new dawn in the region’s rail transport infrastructure, the minister said at a gathering in Bhimavaram. Earlier, Devi Prasad Pande, General Manager, SCR, in his address spoke on the performance of SCR during the financial year 2012-13.

In 2012-13, the zone registered the highest-ever freight loading of 111.50 million tonne and crossed a significant mile stone of Rs 10,000 crore in gross earnings, he added.
