Media reports say that contractors are not enthusiastic to take up upgradation of roads planned at Rs 72 crore by the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP). The work comprises upgradation of seven major roads, including Residency and Richmond Road in the heart of the Indian IT City. Although BBMP and Karnataka government are eager to provide quality roads in the city through ‘TenderSure’ initiative by integrating all the civic agencies, there are no takers for the project.
Under the first phase, the BBMP has picked up seven major roads for upgradation- Residency, RichmÂond, St. Marks, CommissarÂiate, Mallya Road, Cunningham and Museum Road at a cost of Rs. 72 crore. Surprisingly, no bidders came forward for the first round and in the second, a bid was disqualified for technical reasons, said sources in the BBMP.
Engineers suspect that contractors are wary about taking up work on major roads due to the movement of heavy traffic and lines by several utilities like BWSSB, Bescom and BSNL running underneath. The heavy traffic and shifting of utilities is both time-consuming and cumbersome.
In order to have co-ordinated efforts for the implementation of TenderSure project, different agencies will be involved in shifting utilities, unlike other projects. The BBMP is making efforts to clear the confusion that is weighing heavily on contractors’ minds. Meanwhile, 6.7 km of road under the metro corridor have been entrusted to the Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation (BMRCL) on a cost-sharing basis with the BBMP, said the engineer.
