The Tamil Nadu government is to upgrade the road infrastructure in the state at a cost of Rs 258.42 crore. The State Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa said in a statement that the road projects include road repairs in Ariyalur and Perambalur districts at Rs 152.37 crore.

Jayalalithaa said the roads for a length of 78.8km will be covered in the present mission in these two districts. There is a huge number of limestone mines and cement factories in Perambalur and Ariyalur districts that bring in number of heavy vehicles for transporting goods. As a result, the roads have gone to bad shape, Jayalalithaa said, detailing the funds. Ariyalur roads will be repaired at Rs 86.45 crore, while 65.37 crore will be spent for Perambalur roads.

A dilapidated iron bridge built in 1927, on Chennai-Dindigul national highway, connecting Trichy with Srirangam, the home constituency of Jayalalithaa, will also be replaced with a four-lane bridge at Rs 81 crore. Due to the poor state of affairs, district administration has prohibited traffic movement on the bridge, as a result of which, vehicles take a long deroute to reach the destinations.
