The Tamil Nadu government would upgrade the existing captive port in Cuddalore and set up a new multi-user greenfield port to support the proposed Chemical and Petrochemical Investment Region project.
Earlier, the Marg and Chemplast consortium signed a 30-year concession agreement with the state government to develop the Cuddalore Port.
However, the Tamil Nadu Maritime Board, in December 2012, decided to cancel the tender as it was more than two years old.
The state government decided to develop a new multi-user greenfield port to support over 30 large-scale industries in Cuddalore. Bidding for the all-weather, deep water port at Nagapattinam would be initiated soon, a government document shows.
The Tamil Nadu Maritime Board is considering Sindya Power Generating CompanyÂ’s report to declare the port limits in Sirkazhi Taluk.
In order to develop a captive port, Sindya and Empee Power set up a special purpose vehicle, Sirkazhi Port Private Ltd, as both companies are putting up power plants nearby.
NTPC received in-principle approval to establish a port to handle coal for its proposed 4,000 mw power plant in Villupuram.
