By 2016, natural gas-based power plants may get about 6-10 million standard cubic feet per day (mscmd) of gas from the new fields of ONGC (Oil and Natural Gas Corp) and GSPC (Gujarat State Petroleum Corp).
Supply of gas from these new fields may compensate partially the shortage of gas owing to reduction in output from Reliance Industries (RIL)Â’s KG-D6 field.
Owing to supply disruption from RIL’s KG-D6 block, 25 power plants are suffering from insufficient gas supply.
In 2010, output from KG-D6 declined 77 per cent from 61 mscmd to about 14 mscmd now. RIL was supposed to supply around 29.7 mscmd of gas to these power units.
Moreover, around 8,000 mw of new gas-based capacities are also waiting for gas allocation now.
These power plants may get gas from the new fields of ONGC and GSPC, reports indicate. By 2016-17, ONGC may begin production from the KG-DWN-98/2 block. These fields have to make up for the shortfall in the KG-D6, as RILÂ’s new discoveries may come up for production by 2018-19 only, reports indicate.
In nine discoveries in the KG Basin, off the Andhra coast,
ONGC found 4.85 trillion cubic feet of gas reserves.
