Tata Steel is to construct a new 15-million pound vacuum induction melting (VIM) furnace at its South Yorkshire plant in the UK by 2015. The furnace is to develop innovative products for aerospace industry and tap new market opportunities. The furnace will enable the firm to increase its supply of high-purity steel to the aerospace industry.
Mark Broxholme, Managing Director of Tata Speciality Steels said that the company having its own manufacturing capability will greatly increase its scope for VIM sales. He added that this will give its customers that the company is fully committed to the aerospace market for the long term.
According to him, VIM production involves melting and casting steel in an oxygen-free atmosphere, producing steel which is very clean with a low gas content.
