In this regard, the Prime MinisterÂ’s Office urged the Railways to execute them within three years of the necessary clearances being obtained. These railway tracks will facilitate the evacuation of around 100 million tonne every year, starting 2015.

By 2013, all PowerGrid sub-stations will be remotely controlled by the National Transmission Asset Management Centre at Manesar, said RN Nayak, Chairman and Managing Director, PowerGrid. There will be cameras observing the functioning of devices and equipment and the stations will be virtually managed remotely, he said, adding that having eight persons per sub-station was a waste of manpower.

India suffers over 11% power generation loss

A Central Electricity Authority review has said that India suffered a power generation loss of over 11.46 per cent, in 2011-12, on account of fuel shortage, transmission bottlenecks and an equipment pro­blem. All India electricity
generation in the country during 2011-12 has been at 876.89 bu. The increased for­ced outages were due to inc­reased forced shutdown of units due to coal supply problem and transmission constr­aints and equipment problems of some new units, the CEA report said.

Model solar cities

Model solar cities

The Union New and Renewable Energy Ministry is to develop 41 cities, including Chandigarh, Nagpur, Mysore and Gandhinagar, as model solar cities. The list of proposed solar model cities also includes Gandhinagar, Nagpur and Chandigarh. The Ministry has approved the master plans for the 28 cities and the project installations have already started in a few cities, the Ministry said in a release.
