When will my city become smart? This is the question that I am sought to respond to very often. The name 'Smart Cities Mission' should be renamed 'Smart Area Mission' as no city under smart cities will turn smart as per the funding provided under the mission but only an area will receive focused attention in its transformation.

India’s Metro Trail
The total length of operational metro projects in India presently stands at about 440 km and is growing. Cities like Bengaluru, Chennai, Gurugram, Kochi, Kolkata, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Lucknow and the Delhi National Capital Region (NCR) where they are already operational, are simultaneously adding on to their existing route networks.
Road Widening Under Progress
The last two decades witnessed highway infrastructure being developed on a massive scale in the country. Now the government has unveiled another huge new highway development programme (covering 83,000 km) under the Bharatmala Pariyojana, which will see a paradigm shift in highway development with focus on improving the efficiency of the national corridor and a long-term view on the highways network.
Low-value projects are among the most challenging

Kochi Metro is the first Indian metro to have communication-based train control (CBTC) signalling system. Our trains are unattended train operation (UTO) compatible.
By 2025, we will have 250 km of metro network in Karnataka
The project is progressing well. Currently, we are operating North-South and East-West that span over 42.8 km with a ridership of more than four lakh commuters every day.

Digitisation will bring down O&M cost
Prakash Kumar Chandraker, Vice President & Managing Director, Energy Business, Schneider Electric, says that expansion of digitalisation in the metro rail space will benefit their customer as it would substantially reduce their operation and maintenance (O&M) costs in terms of the quantum of support they need.
TOT would enable more assets recycling
The recent TOT bids have shown that this model can be ideal for international institutional investors who have appetite for long-term investments and access to low-cost debts.
