Key road in Coimbatore caves-in
In Coimbatore city, a newly constructed underground drainage chamber on Sathyamangalam Road has been caved-in forcing the traffic police to barricade the caved-in portion for safety and to keep off the traffic from plying on it. Complaints are pouring in that the contractor executing the project on behalf of the Coimbatore Corporation is at fault.
Karnataka to spend more on road maintenance
The Karnataka government has taken note of the bad condition of the roads in the State and assured its Public Works Department (PWD) to provide more funds to repair and maintain them. Profits of major ports decline, Govt to cut manpower
Taking note of reduction in the profits of its 12 major ports in the country, the government of India has taken several steps to reduce costs. As a cost cutting measure, the Centre wants to reduce surplus manpower through the Voluntary Retirement Scheme (VRS). The Union Shipping Minister GK Vasan said this in the Lok Sabha recently. Profit of major ports declined by about 30 per cent to Rs 1,220.61 crore in 2012-13 over the previous fiscal, Vasan said in a written reply to the Lok Sabha.
Govt okays 18 single brand retail FDI proposals till May
Between April 2010 and May 2013, the Union government approved a total of 18 foreign direct investment proposals worth $173 million in the single brand retail sector, the Union Commerce and Industry Minister Anand Sharma told the Lok Sabha on August 20. Of these proposals, the government approved five proposals in the sector worth $137.68 million during the first two months of the current fiscal, the Minister added.
HC asks govt to appoint experts to monitor hydel projects
The High Court of Himachal Pradesh has asked the State government to ensure appointment of expert professionals to supervise and monitor hydel projects for protection of fragile ecology of the state. Whie granting permission to the companies concerned, the government should impose a condition of appointing the professionals to monitor construction of hydel projects during their construcitn, the bench said.
AP govts apathy over expansion of Vijayawada Airport
The Andhra Pradesh government has failed to expand the runway at Vijayawada airport to 10,500 ft and modernisation of the terminal building at the airport even after six years after signing an MoU with the Airports Authority of India in this regard.
