NTPC is likely to commence production from its two captive coal mines of Chatti-Bariatu and Kerandari in Jharkand by June 2016. However, its another mine - Chatti- Bariatu (South) - in the eastern state will be developed by 2038.

CIL June output misses target
Coal India (CIL) achieved an output of 34.54 million tonne (mt) in June, missing its target of 36.54 mt. This comes at a time when the PSU is drawing flak for missing production targets.
ICVL eyes 100% stake in Mozambique coking coal mine
International Coal Ventures Ltd (ICVL), a joint venture set-up between state-owned companies to buy coal mines abroad, is inching closer to bid for acquiring 100 per cent stake in a major coking coal property in Mozambique.
New Mahagenco units may not get coal
Six Mahagenco units are under various stages of construction but the biggest problem facing them is coal linkage. Mahagenco and Gujarat State Electricity Corporation Ltd (GSECL) had been allocated two captive blocks in Odisha in 2006.
Coal demand falls
Global coal prices and demand have fallen, as coal is being replaced by other sources of energy. It is replaced by shale gas in the US and is likely to lose out to renewable energy in China. In India, the new government is keen to accelerate mining to unlock indigenous coal reserves of 200 billion metric tonnes.
New mining policy in Goa
Goa Government has said it will adopt a transparent mechanism to award mining leases in future and was studying the SC order lifting ban on iron ore extraction before taking a decision on vacating current mine operators whose fate hangs in balance.
Coal India CMD quits
S Narsing Rao has stepped down as the Chairman and Managing Director of Coal India to take up a new role as Principal Secretary to K Chandrasekhar Rao, the Chief Minister of India's 29th state Telangana from June 2. Meanwhile, there is no word yet on the successor of Rao in Coal India after his resignation.
Action plan for CIL
Coal India (CIL) has been asked by the new government to prepare an action plan for enhancing output over the next five years and fast-track the completion of projects and expansion of existing coal mines. The government has also asked CIL to adopt an action plan for technology development and modernisation of mines.
Odisha renews leases of 4 iron ore blocks
The Odisha government has renewed leases of three captive mines of the Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL) and one of Odisha Mining Corporation, paving the way for resumption of mining operations in the state after a fortnight.
Priority to critical rail links to carry coal
The new Union government will accord high priority to implementation of three critical rail links, a move that will ensure transportation of 300 million tonnes (MT) of additional coal amid shortages faced in the country. The three rail corridors are: Tori-Shivpuri-Kathotia.
