Govt earmarks Rs 74,000 cr for ports development

In this current 12th Five Year Plan (2012-2017), the Union Shipping Ministry has decided to earmark Rs 73,793.95 crore for port sector to develop various projects. India has a total of 187 minor ports and 13 major ports spread across its nine maritime states.

Sagar Island seaport’s phase I to start from 2017

Chairman of Kolkata port RPS Kahlon has said that
construction work on the Rs 8,000-crore Sagar Island seaport in West Bengal would begin in two years and the first phase operations would commence from 2017. Once the port commence operations, cargo handling at the existing Kolkata port would be stopped and the place could be used as anchoring for barges, Kahlon said.

Kerala proposes to set up maritime board, earmarks Rs 20 cr

For setting up Kerala Maritime Board (KMB), the Kerala government has submitted a proposal to the Union government. The proposed Board is intended to initiate all port-related activities and maritime cargo businesses in the state. The proposed KMB will come up at Maradu in Kochi with an initial investment of Rs 20 crore and will look at all possible avenues for port-related activities.

Fall in trade reduces turnaround time in major ports

Average turnaround and pre-berthing time for ships declined 7 per cent and 11 per cent, respectively at major ports during April and May 2013. The decline of these two variables, which indicate improved efficiency, is not due to capacity addition, but due to a fall in trade, as the number of vessels handled by ports fell from 3,260 to 3,139 during the period, reports indic
