Two UMPPs to bring Rs 24,000 cr orders to firms
Upcoming ultra mega power projects (UMPPs) in the country have become a hope for orders of capital goods companies at a time when the order inflows have dried up. Now companies like Larsen & Toubro and Thermax are eyeing orders worth around Rs 24,000 crore from a two mega power projects in Orissa and Tamil Nadu.
Ten-year plan ready for Bihar power transmission
To augment and strengthen power transmission network in Bihar, the state government has prepared a master plan for the next 10 years. Under the plan, various works have been identified in the light of projected demand for power. Bihar expects power availability in the state to go up to 6,000 MW by the end of the current 12th Plan period in 2017 from about 2,000 MW at present.
Power from waste
By setting up solid waste management plants, the Gujarat government will run a pilot project in 50 cities to generate power, fertiliser and reusable water, said the state Chief Minister Narendra Modi. The state's rural areas will get the power, reusable water and fertilisers produced in these plants for usage in agriculture. Gujarat government will work with Japanese agencies for development of some of these plants by utilising cutting edge technology from Japan, the CM added.
Tatas wind power projects
Tata Power is setting up 160 MW wind projects throughout the country. Tata Power already has an installed wind energy generation capacity of 398 MW with projects across Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. From wind projects, the company saw its electricity generation rose 43 per cent to 813 million units in the year ended March 2013 from 569 million units in the previous year.

Govt-owned power discoms’ losses swell 2.5 times in 3-yrs
The losses of power distributing firms to the government-owned power generating firms have swelled to a mammoth Rs 15,792 crore at the end of last September while last yearĂâs government promised loss restructuring package for electricity distribution companies is yet to be realised. The swelled sum is a two-and-a-half times jump over total dues of Rs 6,200 crore three years back in June 2010.
