One month deadline has been given to the public sector power companies to sign fuel supply agreements (FSAs) with Coal India (CIL). The deadline has been set up by the Prime MinisterÂ’s Office (PMO) on December 17. The PSUs include NTPC and it they fail to meet the deadline the FSAs would be withdrawn, the PMO has warned.
Sources told a leading news agency that the PMO has asked Power Ministry to direct power PSUs to sign fuel supply agreements (FSAs) with CIL within a month from December 17.

Many small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in Faridabad region of Haryana, who are members of the Faridabad Small Industries Association (FSIA), are joining hands and eyeing an arrangement for collective power purchase from a private electricity distribution company. SMEs in Faridabad are faced with bleak power situations that hurt their efficiency,
FSIA members said this could be the countryÂ’s first example of an SME cluster buying power from a private electricity distributor.
Tata Power to modernise Trombay thermal plant
Tata Power has proposed modernisation of its 500 MW Unit 6 at Trombay Thermal Power Station. The plan includes addition of coal firing equipment and installation of pollution control equipment
to make the unit work on coal, oil and gas, wherein all three fuels can be combined in any percentage.
This is being done to control spiralling oil cost, the company said. The proposed modernisation will improve utilisation of full capacity of 500 MW. It will also reduce fuel cost and help lower tariffs
Haryana for hydel project in Bhutan
Haryana government is setting up a joint venture hydel power project in Bhutan in partnership with the Royal Government of the independent State. Haryana Chief Minister, Bhupinder Singh Hooda said that the State would get 1,500 to 2,000 MW power from Bhutan in next four to five years at rates economical than thermal power.
SuzlonÂ’s arm wins order in Canada
For delivery of 51 wind turbines, Suzlon Group subsidiary, REpower Systems SE has concluded a contract with wpd Europe GmbH, a subsidiary of project developer wpd AG, the company announced. As part of this, a service and maintenance agreement (ISP) for a total of 15 years for the new projects was also concluded, the company said in a statement. The REpower MM92 turbines, each with a rated power of 2.05 MW, are intended for six projects to be constructed and commissioned in 2014.
BGR generators for NTPCs project
To supply two 800-MW steam turbine generators for NTPCÂ’s Lara Super Thermal Power Project, BGR Energy is set to start work on the Rs 1,548-crore contract in Chattisgarh. The NTPC project is a 4,000 MW project of 5 x800 mw and the Chennai-based BGR Energy will provide two (2x800 MW) steam turbine generators for the project.
Vizag, Vijayawada to operationalise BRTS
The trial runs for bus rapid transit system (BRTS) at both Visakhapatnam and Vijayawada have been completed recently. The project may be commissioned in 2013, reports suggest. Both projects, which began in 2008, have suffered delays by two or three years.The projects have been taken up with funds from the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURUM), with the central government bearing half of the cost. The Rs 150 crore Vijayawada BRTS project is a smaller one, covering only 15.5 km

In the context of increasing demand for energy, there is a need to explore, enhance, develop and fortify relations with energy exporting countries and also develop technologies for alternate energy sources, he said.

Essar Power starts Mahan-I power project
Essar Power has announced that the 600 MW (mw) unit 1 of its 1,200 MW Mahan-I power project in Madhya Pradesh has commenced generating power.This is Essar PowerÂ’s eighth operational power plant with an capacity of 600 MW. This plant is the largest size single unit commissioned in Madhya Pradesh. The Mahan-I plant begins operations using a combination of imported coal and coal sourced from Coal IndiaÂ’s e-auction process.
