The Union government, upset by several jammed highway projects, plans to re-negotiate contracts worth Rs 99,000 crore with some of the private developers to give them payment concessions, instead of imposing penalties. The government's grand rescue plan, billed as a one-time measure, is in the final stages of approval and involves 23 concessionaires (the private parties) and a total project cost of Rs 34,000 crore ($5.2 billion).

Kozhikode roads to be repaired at Rs 72 cr within 15 days
In Kozhikode district of Kerala, about 1,000 km of roads that were damaged due to the recent rains will be repaired on a war-footing within the next 15 days by spending Rs 72 crore. The State government has doubled the fund allocated to carry out the repair works from Rs 36.7 crore to Rs 72 crore considering the extensive damage caused by this year's monsoon on the district's roads.
Govt plans to cut road toll to developers if project is delayed
Road developers who are collecting toll from impending road projects without completing them will be barred to collect such toll by the Union government soon. The government will prevent such road developers from collecting toll if they fail to complete the expansion work within the given period, say media reports.
NHAI to meet banks before lending to road developers
Feeling that banks are misguided over lending to road developers, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has asked the banks to hold joint meetings with it before lending to road infrastructure projects. Railways flouts norms in road construction in Ratlam
In Ratlam of Madhya Pradesh, the diversion road constructed on Dhoswas-Ratlam route has flouted norms and caused monetary loss to the railways, say documents procured by an RTI activist. The road has been constructed on a private land and the contractor in December 2011 flouted the approved plan for his convenience and the officials concerned in the process of the road construction.
Re-carpeting of MG Road in Gurgaon to end in 6 months
The Haryana Public Works Department (PWD) has stated that the re-carpeting and re-construction of MG Road in Gurgaon will be completed within six months. The heavy vehicular traffic on the stretch was delaying the work, PWD authorities said. The work was taken up last month when Gurgaon and Delhi surburbs were witnessing heavy rains.
Rs 157 cr for road repairs in West Bengal
The 127 civic bodies in West Bengal were allocated Rs 157 crore by the State government for repair of major roads in the state. The allocation is keeping in view of the ensuing Durgapuja in the state. Kolkata Municipal Corporation is also included in the civic bodies for the allocation.
Plea to Kerala govt for completion of new bridge in Kalady
In Ernakulam district of Kerala, MLAs Jose Thettayil and Saju Paul have asked the government to speed up construction of a new bridge on MC Road at Kalady in the district. The MLAs said in Kochi that the Chief Minister Oommen Chandy should convene a meeting for the timely completion of the bridge.

Media reports say that now the decks have been cleared for speeding up of the widening of Jaipur-Gurgaon stretch of national highway (NH -8), which has been pending since a long time. Authorities discussed the pending issue on September 10. It is said that consensus has been reached on the issue between officials of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and the Rajasthan State government.
