When it comes to maintenance of roads in urban area, the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) appears to be faring better than its counterparts in other cities. Although the roads at many places have undergone repeated patchwork repairs in Vizag, they are somehow holding through and have not proved hazards to the road-users even during the heavy rain, say residents of the city.

About Rs 120 crore has been disbursed as subsidy to LPG customers in the country through the Aadhaar payment bridge facilitated by NPCI from June 1 to July 24, said Vijay S. India needs fuel saving standards for transport: CSE
India is the only major vehicle producing country in the world without fuel saving standards for cars, said a report from the Centre for Science and Environment (CSE). More than 40 per cent of the oil and oil products in the country go into running vehicles. In fact, if this guzzling continues unabated, it can virtually wipe out the gains of fuel savings from all other steps, and undermine all efforts at reducing climate change risks, said Sunita Narain, CSE Director General.
TN sanctions Rs 2,950 cr for road works
In Tamil Nadu, more than 2,400 road works will be undertaken across the state at a cost of Rs 2,950 crore as part of the Integrated Road Development programme. The State Chief Minister Jayalalithaa on July 24 ordered the allocation for the works that would improve connectivity, besides reducing fuel consumption and travel time. The allocation for this fiscal was higher – Rs 2,262 crore was set aside last financial year.
Rs 200 cr spent for road works in Hyderabad

Kochi Corporation to pace up road repairs
The Kochi Corporation has decided to speed up the repair work of roads across the city. The Council which met on July 24 decided to initiate proceedings for the same. The zonal engineers will be asked to lay metal patching on the roads on a war-footing. This will provide a short-term relief for commuters, said the Corporation. The potholes of the city roads will be repaired at the earliest, the Corporation said.
Odisha to build 200 more bridges under Biju Setu scheme
In Odisha, the State government would build 200 more bridges in the state at a cost of Rs 700 crore in this current fiscal. The government on July 20 announced that the bridges would be built under the Biju Setu Yojana. The State Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, at meeting decided that the bridges would be built on 111 rural development and 82 panchayat roads. The tender process would be completed by October.
TN to award contract for phase-II of Chennai ORR
To construct phase-II of Chennai Outer Ring Road, from Nemilichery to Minjur, the Tamil Nadu government has recently given its nod to a consortium of Ashoka Buildcon and GVR Infra Projects. Work on phase-I of the ORR, from Vandalur to Nemilichery, is nearing completion. On completion, the 61.65-km-long road will form a semicircle around the city and help decongest Chennai’s roads. It will act as a major link and connect four national highways — NH 4, NH 5, NH 45 and NH 205.
