R Mohan, director of Ports and Inland Water Transport at Karnataka government said the Karnataka Maritime Board Bill is awaiting the approval of the President of India.
The state legislature passed the Bill in 2011 and it was submitted to the President for assent, he said.
With a view to take up various developmental projects and to maintain ports along the 300-km-long coastline of Karnataka, the state government wants to set up the board. The state has 10 minor ports.
Meanwhile, Mohan said the state government prepared a Rs 911-crore plan to prevent sea erosion along coastal Karnataka. The cost of this project will be jointly shared by the state government and the Asian Development Bank.
The plan will be implemented in three phases over a period of eight years. In the first phase, the work will be taken up at a cost of Rs 223.32 crore on Ullal stretch in Dakshina Kannada district.
The government finished the tender process for constructing four in-shore berms at Ullal. The Kochi-based RDS Projects has been awarded this work. The site has been handed over to the company for further works, he said.
Other works include beach nourishment and construction of reefs at Ullal among others, he said. The project will be implemented at Udyavara Padukere and Uliyaragoli in Udupi district, and at Pavinakurve in Uttara Kannada district in the next phases, Mohan said.
