Proposal to build 2 road under bridges remains on paper

Four years after holding public hearings, the Tamil Nadu State Highways DepartmentÂ’s proposals to construct two road under bridges (RUBs) to replace level crossings in Chennai’s Annamalai Nagar and Wimco remain only in paper. Thiruvottiyur residents are irked over inordinate delay in taking up the RUB work which would cut down travelling time for the people living in western parts of the locality.

The Highways Department has proposed to construct the two RUBs at a cost of Rs 56 crore. Residents of Jyothinagar in Chennai said the level crossing gets shut even 10 minutes before the train crosses the track, which causes long delays for road users.

The residents said that the long-pending demand for a road over bridge or subway to facilitate free movement of vehicles is yet to be taken up. The people said that the subways would not only help the local people, it would also reduce travel distance for the people living in areas like Andarkuppam and Manali New Town. Residents of Thiruvottiyur area said that most of the highways project are either delayed or not taken up at all in the locality.
