The Prime Minister Manmohan Singh headed Cabinet Committee on Investments is expected to speed up Rs 49,000 crore worth power plants of companies like Reliance Power and Essar Power, which have been stuck for want of environment and forest clearances at various levels. The panel will consider diversion of forest land for a coal block attached to Rs 20,852 crore Sasan ultra mega power project.

8.5 GW gas-based plants remain idle
Some reports indicate that around 8,500 MW of gas-based power plants are lying idle in the country owing to non-availability of fuel. A high-powered ministerial panel rejected a proposal to cut natural gas supplies to urea plants and divert that fuel to power companies.
Govt may not give significant gas to power sector
An Empowered Group of Ministers (EGoM) may not give any significant natural gas to the fuel-starved power producing units in the country till domestic production rises in 2016-17. Over $21 billion power plants are stranded for want of fuel. The EGoM headed by Defence Minister AK Antony is to meet shortly to squeeze out some gas from current year output of 105 million standard cubic meters a day for the power plants.
Scindia seeks gas supply for $21 bn power plants
Union Power Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia has emphasised over an urgent solution on fuel woes to generate an additional 14,000 mw of electricity. Over $21 billion worth of power plants have stalled due to natural gas shortfall, Scindia said. Besides seeking untied gas currently produced or likely to be produced in future by companies like State-owned ONGC and GSPC, Scindia wants fertiliser plants to spare some gas after fulfilling the requirement for producing urea.

Coal India to cut supplies to CPPs
Coal India (CIL) is considering a reduction in coal supplies to captive power plants (CPPs) operated by energy intensive industries, which account for 15 per cent of the country's power generation capacity.
CCEA may clear fuel pass
In order to enable power plants to pass on the rise in the cost of imported fuel to end consumers, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) may clear the fuel pass through mechanism.
Gas-based power plants need 72 mscmd gas
Media reports quoted a top source from the union power ministry as saying that natural gas-based power plants in the country need 72 mscmd of gas to operate at 75 per cent plant load factor. However, at present they get only 27 mscmd gas, which enable them to operate at only 29 per cent plant load factor, reports suggest
GAIL revives pipeline project
GAIL India has revived the much delayed Rs 7,596 crore Jagdishpur-Haldia gas pipeline gas pipeline project. It is learnt that the groundwork for the project, which was sanctioned in 2007, is yet to start. The project was sanctioned almost five years ago. However, first a glitch over gas availability led to delay in execution.
