Govt defends Rs 2,000 cr Jet-Etihad deal
The Union government on July 2 defended the nearly Rs.2,000 crore deal between Jet Airways and Abu Dhabi-based carrier Etihad, saying the investment is important for India and opposition to the pact is politically motivated. Those opposing the deal are long on politics and short on facts, Union Civil Aviation Minister Ajit Singh said about the widespread opposition to the deal.
Govt fast-tracks 23 mega power projects
Media reports say that the Union government has put 23 big-ticket power projects, which were stalled for want of fuel supply linkages and environmental clearances on fast track. These projects are estimated to generate 23,000 mw of power capacity across the country. Centre finalises Rs 2,000-cr budget for Puducherry
For Puducherry's annual budget plan for 2013-14 the Union government finalised at Rs 2,000 crore on June 27. The outlay includes Central assistance of about Rs 783 crore, in addition to about Rs 100 crore for Centrally-sponsored schemes. The Plan size was finalised at a meeting in Delhi between Deputy Chairman of Planning Commission Montek Singh Ahluwalia and Chief Minister of Puducherry N Rangasamy.
Govt hiked gas price to hit power, fertiliser firms
As the Union government hiked gas price on June 28 will benefit a lot the government-owned Oil and Natural Gas Corp (ONGC) and private major Reliance Industries (RIL), power and fertiliser companies will see their fuel costs shooting up substantially. As the power industry, a major consumer of natural gas, operates on the principle of pass-through of fuel costs to consumers, Indian consumers will have to shell out more for electricity, say analysts.
Centre may drop SEZ policy
The Union government is finally planning to do away with the Special Economic Zone (SEZ) programme it had launched in 2006 with much fanfare. While the existing SEZs will continue to remain operational, those approved might not be notified and developers be allowed to utilise the land for other purposes. It is expected that the government's decision comes in the wake of a series of controversies and scams plaguing the SEZ programme.
