With proposed construction of a bridge across the Cauvery between two stations, Unniyur and Nerur near Tiruchirapalli or Trichy, at least 35 km distance will be reduced for commuters. The Tamil Nadu government has proposed to construct the bridge. The area residents have expressed happiness over the proposal.
On the outskirts of Trichy district, Unniyur is located near Kattuputhur along the Mohanur highway. It will now be connected to Nerur in Karur, where about 30 villages are located.
Presently, commuters have been using the Mohanur highway to reach Nerur. Residents living along the stretch said earlier, they used to cross the river by wading through the water or in a coracle (parisal). However, heavy sand mining made crossing the river dangerous.
