Media reports suggest Dahej Harbour Infrastructure plans to set up a new, multi-purpose berth that can also handle containers at its captive jetty in the Dahej port, Gujarat.
It is also learnt that the new, multi-purpose berth will be designed to handle 5-6 mn t of cargo a year including containers.
The company, which is a wholly owned unit of Birla Copper, plans to invest around Rs 600 crore in this project and has sought approval from the Gujarat Maritime Board (GMB) for this purpose.
The Aditya Birla Group firm plans plans to set up the facility because a lot of its cargo goes in containers and the proposed berth could handle containers for its own requirements. Currently, Jawaharlal Nehru Port in Mumbai handles shipment of container cargo of the group.
Meanwhile, the company faces delay in setting up new deep-draft port at Chudamani in OrissaÂ’s Badrak district at a cost of Rs 1, 200 crore because of lack of environment clearance.
The new port, mostly for in-house requirements, will be deep enough to allow the biggest of the bulk cargo-carrying ships to dock, he said.
The new port, to be developed by Essel Mining and Industries, another group company, will have a capacity to load 6 mn t of cargo, mainly iron ore for exports, a year.
