The Kerala government will no longer push for any comprehensive changes in the alignments fixed by National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) for widening of highways in Kerala. Emphasising its stand, the State government has decided to set up a committee chaired by the chief secretary for rectifying mistakes, if any, at places where there is serious problems and for protecting the places of worship from demolition.
According to a government order, the panel will meet once a month to examine and dispose of serious objections received from public. The decision comes in the background of several complaints over the alignments fixed by NHAI for road widening in the state.
The alignment of four-laning has been finalized taking into account various aspects like geometrics of the existing road, safety of traffic on the road after completion of four-laning at the designed speed of 80/100 kmph and optimum utilization of the right of way, the order says.
In order to achieve these standards, it was not possible to adopt concentric widening (widening equally from both the sides of the existing road) and hence eccentric widening, wherever necessary, had been proposed by technical experts. If concentric widening is done, all the geometric deficiencies that are in the present road will remain forever and will lead to serious accidents, says the order.
