Govt to upgrade six airports in Gujarat

In a reply to a question in Rajya Sabha, Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation KC Venugopal informed that around Rs 322 crore would be invested to modernize six airports in Gujarat during the Twelfth Five-Year Plan period (2012-17).

These airports are Ahmedabad, Bhavnagar, Jamnagar, Rajkot, Surat and Vadodara. The government would construct a new control tower-cum-technical block with an estimated investment of Rs 25 crore at Ahmedabad airport. Work for a new domestic terminal will also begin, involving an outlay of Rs 200 crore. Other works include a new cargo complex (Rs 14 crore) and strengthening the runway for A-380 (Rs 50 crore).

With an estimated investment of Rs 25 crore, the government would set up a new ATC tower-cum-technical block at Vadodara airport. Surat airport will get Rs 31 crore for construction of parkways, new taxi trak, extension of runway, construction of a cargo complex and strengthening of run way.

The government would also upgrade Bhavnagar airport with an investment of Rs 104 crore. This also involves a new terminal building. Similarly, Jamnagar airport will also get a new terminal building with an investment of Rs 54 crore from a total outlay of Rs 60 crore for the airport.

Rajkot airport will get a new building with an estimated investment of Rs 104 crore. Of this, Rs 34 crore has been earmarked for the 12 Five Year Plan.
