Union shipping ministry wants to expedite the award of the Rs 9,000 crore fourth container terminal project at Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) in Mumbai.

The project has been delayed by more than three years after a consortium of Port of Singapore and ABG Ports exited the contract. The consortium had outbid others then by offering to share more than 50 percent of the revenue to JNPT.

The proposed terminal would be one of the largest of its kind in the country and it can handle more than seven vessels at a time and is expected to be revenue churner.

Companies looking to participate in the project include Dubai-based DP World, Maersk-operated APM Terminals, Adani Ports, Essar Ports and Larsen & Toubro.

The fourth terminal at JNPT will have a capacity of 4.8 million teu and a berth of 2 km in length which will make it one of the largest in the country.

The project is expected to reduce the capacity constraints at the port as it operates at more than 100 percent of its capacity.

The board of the port trust would take a final decision on whether to award the project in two different parts in order to attract bidders.
