The Planning Commission would decide on whether whether to clear the Rs 4266.88 crore railway line project between Karnataka and Kerala.

Of the estimated cost Rs 4266.88 crore, the cost of laying 72-km railway line between Nanjangud and Sulthan Bathery is estimated at Rs 764 crore.

The Nilgiris-Wayanad National Highway and Railway Action Committee (NWNHRAC) has updated the earlier survey on the 236-km rail line project and has sent the report to the Planning Commission for approval.

According to a preliminary survey, the project, which was earlier approved by the Finance wing of Railways, is non-remunerative. This delayed the implementation of the project.

Over 2 crore residents in the districts of Wayanad, the Nilgiris, Mysore, Chamrajanagar, Coorg, Kannur, Kozhikode and Malappuram would benefit from the proposed project. It is also said to ease the cargo movement between Bangalore and Kochi.

The proposed new line would take off from Nilambur in Malappuram district and pass through Cheeral and Sulthan Bathery in Wayanad district, Ayyankolli in Tamil Nadu and Hura in Karnataka.
